Joseph’s Home Future
Joseph’s Home is a not-for-profit,Community Housing, Development Organization (CHDO) and is certified and licensed by the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) as a not-for-profit corporation operating housing programs that are certified and licensed by the New York State Health Department. Joseph’s Home, Inc. does not operate medical model housing or medical-based programs. It is strictly a non-treatment residential program agency.
The core mission of Joseph’s Home, Inc. is to create and manage safe, clean, healing and affordable rental homes for people with very special needs and a paucity of personal financial resources. (Click here for the full mission statement)
The Joseph’s Home Board of Directors and Staff embrace this mission as a manifestation of their belief that every human being who has done no harm to any other human being has worth and should have as a basic human right, a bed, pillow, room and home in which to feel safe, respected and welcome as prerequisites to nurturing their self esteem, dignity and hope.
The Joseph’s Home, Inc. primary target populations are:
- Innocent adult victims of persistent/chronic congenital and degenerative brain/mind disabilities but capable of living semi-independently
- Innocent homeless Veterans
- Low salaried direct hands-on personal care givers to the helpless
- Battered spouses who had to leave their family home for their own safety
- Physically-healthy, psychologically-disabled, impoverished elderly citizens
To optimally serve the above vis-a-vis the special needs of the target populations and the financial constraints of the agency/corporation, Joseph’s Home, Inc. supports the creation of supervised, supportive apartments, and congregate living residences such as our Maggie Conway rooming House funded through Federal, State and County Housing funding sources.
At present, Joseph’s Home, Inc. has forged a partnership with the Rockland Housing Action Coalition (RHAC) to develop seven of fifteen surplus acres of surplus Federal land with the intent of creating more supervised/supported housing. (The remaining eight acres will be a buffer Park.)
In addition, Joseph’s Home, Inc. supports the a recent recommendation made to the Rockland County Legislature proposing the construction of 48 affordable, multi-bedroom apartments on the County-owned Pomona Health Complex; the cost of construction funded by a County bond and reimbursed through rent revenues. If developed by a not-for-profit corporation and the apartments are managed by Joseph’s Home, affordable rental housing can be offered to the lowest paid care givers who assist the helpless, and 10% of the units can be set aside for disabled persons who are able to live independently.
In the interim, Joseph’s Home, Inc. will continue to lobby for better housing models for those who are crushed by the combined loss of hope and a healthy mind and live well below the Federal Poverty Line.
